Laos' Economy
90% of the people of Laos are engaged in agriculture and their agriculture is based on foodstuffs and especially rice. Most of the land suitable for agriculture is covered with rice fields. More than 50,000 tons of rice is produced. Since the rice produced is consumed by the producers, rice is imported for the urban population. Other than rice, corn, cotton, coffee, tobacco, hemp, spices and poppy are produced. The need for oil is provided by coconut in villages.
Livestock breeding in Laos is a sector with the possibility of development. Cattle are systematically grown in the south. Poultry and domestic elephant are also grown. Wild animal hunting is done in the mountains. Some of the inhabitants of Mekang River are fishing.
Laos is a country that has been open to trade since it declared its independence. Foreign trade relations are very limited. It only trade with neighboring countries, Japan and USA. Exports tin, cotton, leather, timber, cardamom, aselbent gum, wood lacquer and gray coffee. The tin constitutes half of its exports. It buys textile products, foodstuffs, tobacco, oil and machinery from the outside. 60% of their income creates foreign aid. Smuggling, especially from the poppy smuggling, provides an income of around $ 12 million
Laos is a country lagging behind the industry. Only handicrafts are available in the country and these are made by primitive methods. However, a small number of cigarettes, matches and sandals are manufactured. Nam-Ngum hydroelectric power plant and dam established in 1971 with foreign aid is insufficient for the country's electricity needs.

About 10% of the population has the same roots as the Meo and Man peoples living in the southern part of China. They are not very similar to the people of Lao and Tai. The rest of the country is made up of various communities, and they speak of the Mont-khmer accent, a Cambodian dialect. The other people in Laos call them Kha (slave).
